Aside from their formal education, they each have over 14 years experience providing psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and families. They have extensive experience with Christian ministers and missionaries, and with helping couples recover from difficulty to return to intimacy and growth.
Part of Our Story
Rick and Kathy met while in theological seminary. Rick had just returned from two years' missionary service in Tanzania; Kathy had just graduated from Baylor University. He wanted to be a missionary, she, a counselor. They met in Hebrew class, in missions class, in spiritual formation, at Sunday School and church, and at get-togethers at the homes of mutual friends. Rick once spent an evening showing Kathy over a thousand slides of life and work in Tanzania and then told her, "I just thought you should know--that's where I intend to spend the rest of my life." To which Kathy answered, "Thanks for showing me the pictures, but I already knew that." They married in 1981.
After Kathy and Rick graduated (the first time) they moved to Comfort, Texas where Rick was pastor of Comfort Baptist Church for three years. It was during this time that their two children were born in San Antonio. The church was very successful and Rick loved it, but the two felt God's call to go abroad. In 1987 they left Texas with their one and two-year old children and moved to Tanzania to start churches and train leaders.
During their time in Tanzania they observed the need for there to be trained therapists or counselors available to missionaries, on the field, and outside the lines of administration in the mission structure. They eventually came to believe that God was calling them to prepare for such a ministry themselves. When they returned on furlugh to the USA in 1995 they went back to school, first completing a year of Masters' level course-work in psychology to qualify to enter a PhD program, then entering PhD studies at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. After completing their PhD seminars in residence in New Orleans, Kathy and Rick and kids went to South America and from Ecuador the two completed their dissertations and prepared to graduate with PhDs in Psychology and Counseling in 2002. For seven years the Owens provided care and counseling for missionary families in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
In 2005 Kathy and Rick began working with ministers in Texas through the Baptist General Convention of Texas. In 2009 they opened their private practice in Forney to serve individuals, couples, and families in Forney, Kaufman, Rockwall, Terrell, Mesquite and the surrounding area.
